The Evolution of Reiki: From Ancient Japan to Modern Wellness

According to a strong Eastern belief, energy flows throughout our bodies. Imbalances in energy flow or blockage of energy levels can lead to several mental disturbances, including stress, depression, and anxiety.

Reiki therapy helps balance energy channels, thus promoting more profound spiritual, cognitive, and physical healing.

A Deep Dive into the History of Reiki

The roots of Reiki were found in Japan in the early 1900s and were brought to the West by an American-Japanese woman named Hawayo Hiromi Takata. Reiki is not a part of any religion that is to be followed and practised by a specific group of people; anyone can practice these techniques while following their own beliefs.

In addition, the word “Reiki” comprises two Japanese words: rei stands for universal, while ki means the flow of a lifeforce of energy in all living things.

We have brought a comprehensive guide to present the evolution of Reiki from ancient Japan to modern-day Reiki practices.

Let’s get started learning about Reiki history, its origin, and its evolution.

The Origin of Reiki

Reiki’s origins can be traced back to ancient Japan in the early twentieth century. Mikao Usui, a spiritual teacher and devout Buddhist, founded this healing technique. Usui showed a profound interest in Japanese healing practices. On his 21-day meditation retreat on Mount Kurama, he experienced a powerful spiritual awakening that led him to discover Reiki.

Mikao Reiki founded his first Reiki clinic in Tokyo back in 1922 to practice spiritual healing and teachings regarding this practice. He learnt Reiki symbols and meaning, and taught Reiki masters about this technique to ensure continued profound healing over generations. Dr. Chujiro Hayashi and Mrs. Hawayo Takata are among the early learners of this system, who later spread the word to the entire world.

The Spread of Reiki to the West

In 1935, Mrs. Hawayo Hiromi Takata was unwell and required surgery. However, her intuition led her to Dr. Chujiro Hayashi at a Reiki clinic in Tokyo, where she underwent significant healing and relaxation. She later learned Reiki Levels One and Two, returned to the United States, began practising these techniques, and eventually became a Reiki master. She amended some practices while healing the sufferers and spread her system by teaching these techniques.

Mrs. Takata trained almost 22 Reiki masters in her life, which happened near the beginning of World War 2 in the US. On the other hand, Reiki practices began to gain popularity in Europe during the 1980s and 1990s. Many people in the UK started incorporating these methods into traditional medicinal therapy.

Evolution of Reiki Over the Years

Starting its journey from ancient Japan, Reiki has travelled to multiple countries, integrated with various cultures, and gone through several religions and cultures. It has undergone changes and adaptations concerning different beliefs and cultures. Practitioners have induced some beliefs of Hinduism, Buddhism, and even Eastern religions into these practices, while some Reiki masters seek it as a secular form of healing.

Whatever the incorporation, the approach works to restore harmony and alleviate pain. In the history of Reiki, practitioners have added multiple symbols and techniques in primary practice to create numerous types of healing and restoring energy balance.

Usui Tibetan Reiki

Western Usui and Usui/Tibetan Reiki are the most common forms of Reiki in the United States. Arthur Robertson is known as the first person to develop this technique. He was also a student of Iris Ishiruko, who got Reiki training from Mrs. Hawayo Hiromi Takata.

William Lee Rand was the President of the International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT) in 1989, adding Tibetan symbols and energy transmission methods to Usui Reiki.

Karuna Reiki

Karuna Reiki is a modern form of Reiki that was developed in the late 1990s and is known as Reiki of Compassion. This practice combines compassion and spiritual healing to experience wellness on the next level. A Karuna Reiki master will understand your needs, briefly discuss your current state, help you with a Karuna Reiki session, and be available for post-session queries.

Reiki techniques kept evolving with advanced tools and techniques. In 2021, these practices got even more popular on social networks like TikTok. This showcasing made the general public aware of the benefits of Reiki and attracted them to try it for deep healing. Although Reiki is not an alternative to medical treatment, it still holds significant importance in reducing anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders.

How Reiki Works?

A Reiki session usually lasts 60 to 90 minutes, and the recipient of Reiki healing can relax on a chair, mat, or massage table. The expert Reiki master then gingerly touches or hovers above the client’s body in a series of up to 15 prescribed positions. This touch redirects the balance of energy and clears the blockages.

A warmth or tingling feeling is commonly observed in the patients while taking Reiki sessions, and a deep sense of relaxation with sound sleep has also been reported in Reiki recipients.
